Brown bear struck by vehicle on Glenn Highway euthanized

A brown bear was killed by police on the Glenn Highway early Friday after it was struck by a vehicle, the second bear to die overnight in separate incidents.

No motorist injuries were reported in the collision near the South Birchwood exit, according to Anchorage police dispatchers. Police reported the crash shortly after 6 a.m. Friday.

Police Lt. John McKinnon said the bear survived the crash, which briefly closed the Glenn Highway in both directions. The bear's gender wasn't immediately available, but there was no indication it had been accompanied by cubs.

"The bear had walked out into the front of a vehicle, and the bear then struck the vehicle," McKinnon said. "It wasn't fatally struck, so an officer shot it."

The bear was the second to be killed in Anchorage within about 12 hours, after a black bear was electrocuted in Mountain View on Thursday evening.

The carcasses of both bears were taken away by people who asked to be notified of any game carcasses that needed to be salvaged, according to Alaska Department of Fish and Game spokesman Ken Marsh.
