Several inches of snow forecast for the Matanuska Valley from Sunday evening into Monday could complicate the morning commute at the start of the Thanksgiving week.
The snow was expected to begin falling around 9 p.m. Sunday and continue until 3 p.m. Monday, the National Weather Service said in a winter weather advisory. Communities including Palmer, Wasilla and Chickaloon could see accumulation between 5 and 9 inches.
With slippery road conditions, drivers were advised to slow down and travel with caution.
Fishhook, Hatcher Pass and Sutton were expected to experience the highest accumulation, the weather service said.
The Hatcher Pass Avalanche Center said in a Facebook post that up to a foot of snow in the forecast could increase avalanche danger in that area, popular for winter recreation.
“Expect conditions to change and avalanche hazard to rise on Monday as a quick-hitting front passes through the area,” the avalanche center said.
In Anchorage, the forecast was calling for less snow — up to 3 inches — starting Sunday night, with higher snow totals possibly exceeding 6 inches in parts of the Chugach Front Range.
