Anchorage snowfall is finally above average, for the first time in at least two years.
A total of 5.1 inches was officially measured at the Anchorage National Weather Service office as of midnight Saturday. That marks a total 51.9 inches of snow for this winter, just a few inches over the seasonal average of 48.2 inches expected for this time of year.
That's a big change from recent low-snow years. In 2016, only 25.8 inches of snow had fallen in the city by the same date. During the winter of 2014-15, the city received a record-low total of only 25.1 inches of snow for the entire season.
Between 2 and 4 inches of snow was reported across the city Saturday, according to Anchorage National Weather Service meteorologist Matthew Clay.
However, deep pockets of snow were measured across Southcentral Alaska on Saturday, according to meteorologist Sam Albanese. He said the weather service received reports of 8 inches in Wasilla and 7 inches in Eagle River.
Snowfall is expected to continue into Sunday morning.
