A 36-year-old Noatak woman was killed after the ATV she was driving crashed in the Northwest Arctic village, Alaska State Troopers said.
A male passenger was medevaced to Kotzebue for treatment of injuries described as not life-threatening, troopers said in an online update. The crash was reported around 6:30 a.m. Sunday, they said.
Georgia Onalik was driving on Willow Street when the ATV went off the road for unknown reasons, troopers spokesman Austin McDaniel said Tuesday. Troopers believe speed was a factor, he said.
“We at this point do not know if it rolled or what exactly happened after it left the roadway,” McDaniel said.
Onalik and the man were in a longtime romantic relationship and have children, he said.
Community members found both lying near the ATV and they were taken to the clinic, where Onalik was pronounced dead, troopers said.
An investigation continues, they said.
