Stebbins man dies in ATV rollover

A Stebbins man died after his all-terrain vehicle rolled Saturday morning, Alaska State Troopers said.

Herbert Aluska, 46, hit a rock and lost control of his side-by-side ATV during a recreational drive on the Norton Sound beach about five miles from Stebbins around 9 a.m. Saturday, troopers spokesman Tim DeSpain said. The ATV rolled onto its side and Aluska was seriously injured, troopers said. He was not wearing a helmet, DeSpain said.

His family began searching for him when they hadn’t heard from him throughout the day and found the crash site, troopers said. Aluska was unresponsive nearby, troopers said.

Medics from Stebbins responded and pronounced Aluska dead, troopers said.

No foul play or impairment was suspected in the incident, troopers said. His remains were sent to the State Medical Examiner’s Office for autopsy, according to troopers.
