Alaska, where roughly one in 10 residents has served in the armed forces, will observe Veterans Day on Monday. Here are some of the events happening in Anchorage and the surrounding area.
Veterans Day is a federal holiday, so government buildings will be closed. Some events commemorating Veterans Day were held over the weekend.
Monday
Veterans Day Ceremony at JBER — Maj. Gen. Torrence Saxe, adjutant general of the Alaska National Guard and commissioner of the Alaska Department of Military & Veterans Affairs, will host a Veterans Day ceremony at the Alaska National Guard armory on Monday at 10:30 a.m. The ceremony will honor veterans and include the announcement of the 2024 Governor’s Veterans Advocacy Award recipient.
Civilians requiring base access must obtain a visitor’s pass at the Visitor Control Center at either the Boniface or Fort Richardson gates. Veterans Day Tribute at Mat-Su College — Mat-Su College’s Veterans Day event started in 2011 and has evolved into a sit-down gathering in the Glenn Massay Theater. Guest speaker Shane Holtz is with Battle Dawgs, an outdoor rehabilitation program designed for combat veterans. The event runs from 2-3 p.m. and is free, but tickets can be claimed online. (8295 E. Veterans Day Movie — Military and Veteran Student Services (MVSS) and Student Veterans of America (SVA) honor veterans on Monday with a movie at 11 a.m. This screening of “Top Gun: Maverick” includes pizza and refreshments in The Den at UAA. (2921 Spirit Way)
