PALMER — A fire broke out Monday at the Matanuska-Susitna Borough landfill Monday in a cell used for disposal of construction and demolition debris.
The fire, which included burning tires, was “contained and controlled immediately,” according to a statement from the borough’s solid waste division. Officials said it appeared the fire was caused by improperly discarded materials. No additional information was provided.
Firefighters from Palmer responded, according to borough emergency services director Ken Barkley. Borough officials said contractors and staff also assisted.
A large black column of smoke was initially visible for miles in either direction before emergency units arrived.
The borough landfill, located near Palmer on 49th State Street, was closed Monday due to the Veterans Day holiday. The facility takes household and municipal waste as well as construction and demolition materials.
