Passenger dies in Big Lake ATV rollover, troopers say

A passenger on an all-terrain vehicle died in a rollover crash Friday night in Big Lake, Alaska State Troopers said.

The driver reported the fatal off-road crash to troopers in Palmer shortly after 9 p.m. Friday, troopers said in an online report.

“The driver stated he and the passenger were driving in the area and decided to have some fun with the vehicle and attempt to drift, which resulted in the ATV rolling over during a sharp turn,” the agency said. “The ATV rolled once onto the passenger’s person and caused fatal injuries.”

Responding to the scene with troopers, emergency medical service crews tried to provide life-saving care, but the passenger was pronounced dead by a local doctor just before 9:30 p.m., according to troopers.

The passenger’s next of kin was at the scene, and the state medical examiner will conduct an autopsy, troopers said.

An investigation indicated that no criminal factors were involved and no signs of impairment were detected from the driver or passenger, troopers said, noting that helmets weren’t worn and seat belts weren’t available on the ATV.
