Man dies while incarcerated at Palmer Correctional Center

A man who was an inmate at the Palmer Correctional Center died this week at the facility, according to authorities.

Robert William Vann, 46, was pronounced dead just before 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, Alaska Department of Corrections spokeswoman Betsy Holley said in a written statement. Foul play wasn’t suspected in his death, Holley said.

He had been incarcerated since June 2019 on an assault conviction, according to Holley.

All inmate deaths are reviewed by Alaska State Troopers and the State Medical Examiner Office, Holley said. The corrections department’s statement didn’t include additional information about the circumstances of Vann’s death.

Vann was the 10th inmate to die this year while in custody of the Department of Corrections.
