One person found dead after Wasilla trailer fire

One person died in a fire Wednesday night in Wasilla, Alaska State Troopers said.

A trooper patrolling a neighborhood around 11:52 p.m. noticed a cloud of smoke nearby, troopers wrote in a statement. By the time the trooper arrived in the area near Carlsbad Place, a fifth-wheel trailer was engulfed in flames, the statement said.

The fire was beginning to spread to a home next to the trailer.

Three people were evacuated from the home along with their pets, said troopers spokesman Tim DeSpain. The Central Mat-Su and Lakes fire departments were called to the scene and were able to contain the fire within 15 to 20 minutes, he said.

Firefighters found one person dead in the trailer, according to DeSpain.

No one else was injured. The home was not a total loss but had “a decent amount of fire damage” on the outside, DeSpain said. It was not immediately clear if the residents were displaced.

Officials from the State Fire Marshal’s Office and State Medical Examiner Office responded. The cause of the fire is being investigated, troopers said. Officials are working to notify the deceased’s next of kin.
