Taxi passenger dead, driver injured in Parks Highway wreck

A Wasilla taxi passenger was killed in a crash last week on the Parks Highway that also injured the taxi driver, according to local police.

The collision near the Parks Highway's intersection with North Weber Drive that killed 67-year-old Joseph Worcester was first reported to dispatchers at about 5:20 p.m. Jan. 14, according to a Wasilla Police Department statement.

Police said Worcester was riding with Wasilla resident Michael Farrington, 62, when their vehicle was struck in the side by a snowplow driven by 18-year-old William McDonald of Anchorage.

In a prepared statement, Wasilla police said Farrington was heading southbound on the Parks Highway when he began to turn the taxi into a bank parking lot.

"Farrington's vehicle turned in front of a truck with a plow on it," the police statement said. The truck, driving northbound on the Parks by McDonald, was unable to stop "and collided with the side of Michael Farrington's taxicab," the statement said.

Farrington and Worcester were taken to Mat-Su Regional Medical Center, where police said Worcester was declared dead.

Police said they are still investigating the crash.

Correction: An earlier version of this article incorrectly reported the last name of the man killed. It was Joseph Worcester, not Worchester.
