Anchorage School Board extends superintendent’s contract to 2020

The Anchorage School Board voted Friday to extend Superintendent Deena Bishop's contract one year, securing her at the helm of the School District until at least July 1, 2020.

"The board as a whole has felt she has moved in the right direction and followed board direction," board member Starr Marsett said during a brief Friday morning meeting.

Bishop started as Anchorage superintendent in July 2016, leaving her job as  superintendent of the Matanuska-Susitna Borough School District.

Anchorage School Board policy limits the superintendent's contract to three years. The board unanimously approved the extension, with board member Bettye Davis absent. The extension followed a board review of Bishop's performance.

Bishop's annual salary of $235,000 will remain the same in the contract extension. It will be reviewed once a year, according to the contract.

"I'm thrilled to work another year," Bishop said after the meeting.
