Anchorage man convicted of neighbor’s murder following argument over dog

A 30-year-old Anchorage man was convicted Tuesday on charges including murder and assault for fatally shooting his neighbor and wounding another man after an argument erupted over a dog in 2020.

An Anchorage Superior Court jury found David Dumpson guilty of first- and second-degree murder, attempted murder and first-degree assault at the end of a trial that spanned several weeks.

Dumpson was accused of shooting and killing 19-year-old Andrew Alston and seriously wounding another man by shooting him in the head during the early hours of May 24, 2020, according to charges filed in the case. Dumpson and Alston lived at the same apartment complex in Northeast Anchorage.

Dumpson got into an argument earlier with Alston and his friends over a dog belonging to one of Alston’s friends, the charges said. Dumpson confronted the group again later and shot one man and fatally shot Alston as he tried to help his wounded friend, the charges said.

Police said they later found Dumpson in downtown Anchorage in an SUV that officers had seen fleeing the scene of the shooting.

Dumpson is scheduled to be sentenced in January.
