A former Anchorage United States Postal Service employee is accused of stealing checks from the mail, according to a federal indictment.
Nha Xiong, 25, was arrested Wednesday in Missouri, according to online court records.
A federal grand jury returned the indictment in December charging Xiong with bank fraud and theft of mail by a postal employee.
During November and December of 2021, Xiong stole checks he was delivering as a postal service employee, the indictment said. Xiong then altered the depositor’s name, typically with white-out, and deposited six checks from three different banks into his own account, it said. In total, he is accused of stealing more than $39,000, according to the indictment.
Xiong was ordered to appear in U.S. District Court in Anchorage in mid-February, court records show. The federal public defender representing him could not immediately be reached for comment on Friday.
