Police investigating death of person found along road in Eagle River as homicide

Anchorage police said this week that they’re investigating the death of a person found along a road in Eagle River early Sunday as a homicide.

The Anchorage Police Department had initially said the person’s death could have been caused by a potential hit and run.

Medics from the Anchorage Fire Department were called to VFW Road just before 2:20 a.m. Sunday because a person was lying on the roadway, police said. The person was dead when responders arrived, according to police.

Medics advised officers that the person had possibly been struck by a vehicle, and police launched an investigation into the death, according to APD.

In an update Tuesday, police said the matter was now a homicide investigation but released no additional information, saying detectives were following up on leads and had no suspect information to provide.

“The motive, and any relationship between the parties involved, is under investigation,” police said in the update.

APD spokeswoman Renee Oistad on Wednesday did not answer questions about the incident, citing the ongoing investigation.

The victim has not been publicly identified. Police said that will happen once the next of kin has been notified.

Police asked anyone with information, including surveillance footage, or anyone who may have seen someone in the area early Sunday morning to contact Detective Troy Clark at 907-729-7604.
