Man killed in East Anchorage shooting

Anchorage police say they are investigating a shooting in East Anchorage on Monday evening as a homicide, but the details surrounding the incident remained unclear.

Officers responding to the 300 block of Klevin Street in the Russian Jack neighborhood just before 8:30 p.m. found a gunshot victim with life-threatening injuries, police said.

The man was taken to a hospital but died, according to an overnight update.

One arrest had been made as of Tuesday morning, but the person directly involved in the shooting had not been charged, according to police.

Police spokeswoman Renee Oistad on Tuesday morning said the person “responsible for the loss of life” was interviewed but had not been charged with any crimes. Asked if that person was determined to be acting in self-defense, Oistad said that remained under investigation.

Another person “involved in the homicide” — 20-year-old Justin R. Austin — was jailed on charges of evidence tampering, third-degree assault and second-degree misconduct involving a weapon, police said. He remained jailed Tuesday at Anchorage Correctional Complex.

Klevin Street was closed between Third and Fourth avenues late Monday as the investigation continued.

No additional details were immediately available.

The man’s death marks the 19th homicide in Anchorage this year. Police are also investigating two apparently unrelated homicides in the Sand Lake area just last week.
