Man sentenced to 99 years in 2017 killing of Anchorage paint shop owner

A 31-year-old man was sentenced this week to 99 years in prison for killing the owner of an Anchorage paint shop in 2017, state prosecutors said Friday.

Randall Igou, who was charged in 65-year-old Gregory Gill’s death, pleaded guilty to first-degree murder in November.

Surveillance footage showed Igou entering Aurora Paint Co. early the morning of Sept. 10, 2017; within two minutes, Gill had been fatally shot and the footage showed Igou walking out of the business with a cash box and Gill’s car keys, according to charging documents filed in the case. He drove away in Gill’s car and was arrested the next day after running into Cheney Lake while being pursued by officers.

Video evidence of Igou at the scene was also shown at the sentencing, prosecutors said.

Igou, who was previously convicted of a felony, apologized to Gill’s family during his sentencing and told Anchorage Superior Court Judge Eric Aarseth that he committed the killing because of his drug use and was ashamed of himself, the Alaska Department of Law said in a statement.

Gill co-owned Aurora Paint Co. with his nephew and had previously managed a paint and drywall business. He was a lifelong Anchorage resident who a relative described as being deeply devoted to his loved ones and dedicated to the family business.
