Anchorage student arrested after threatening virtual classrooms with gun, officials say

A Dimond High School student was arrested after he threatened students and staff with a gun in multiple Zoom classrooms in the Anchorage School District this week, officials said Friday.

The school district notified school resource officers of the threats on Thursday, Anchorage police said in an alert Friday. The suspect was identified and arrested, with charges forwarded to the Department of Juvenile Justice, according to police.

The boy “was able to gain access to several Zoom classrooms and make threatening gestures and use profane, threatening language before being removed from the virtual classroom,” Anchorage School District spokesman Alan Brown said by email Friday.

Brown said school resource officers collaborated with the school district’s information technology department in working to identify the suspect, a student at Dimond High.

“These types of online disruptions during any ASD online class setting are completely unacceptable and essentially cheat students out of learning,” Brown said. “ASD will work closely with our SROs to quickly investigate every instance of threatening behavior and pursue disciplinary action in line with school board policy.”

Brown said the incident occurred separately from threats made by two teens with a gun toward an Inlet View Elementary staff member Friday morning that resulted in the teens’ arrest.
