Man arrested for fatal shooting in Northeast Anchorage that injured others, police say

Update 11:30 a.m. Tuesday: Police identified 19-year-old Andrew Alston as the man fatally shot Sunday morning.

Original story:

A man died and another is in critical condition following a fight that ended with gunfire early Sunday morning in the Mountain View neighborhood, police say. One man is in custody facing murder charges.

Officers were called to the 300 block of Irwin Street just after 1 a.m., police said in an online statement. Investigators believe there was an altercation inside of an apartment that turned physical before gunshots were fired.

One man died on the scene from a gunshot wound to his upper body and another man was taken to a hospital with a life-threatening gunshot wound in his upper body, police said. A woman was evaluated for minor injuries not related to gunfire.

David Dumpson, 26, fled the area with a woman after the shooting, police said. An officer from the Impaired Driving Enforcement Unit stopped his vehicle near Fifth Avenue and I Street and police said he was detained for questioning. Four minors were in Dumpson’s vehicle and police said they were returned to their family members’ care.

The motive for the shooting is unclear but police said all of the adults knew one another and it is believed to be an isolated incident.
