Suspected ‘vehicle prowler’ shot by Anchorage police was 23-year-old man

Update, Sunday, March 10:

The Anchorage Police Department on Saturday identified the four officers who fired at 23-year-old Dylan Aikey.

The officers are Steven Amnatkeolee, an APD officer for four years; Brandon Schafer, an APD officer for eight months; officer Kyle Hastings, an APD officer for two years and Matthew Choate, an APD officer for one year.

Police have identified the man killed during a shootout with officers in Anchorage early Thursday morning.

Dylan Aikey, 23, was shot by four police officers near the intersection of East 16th Avenue and Columbine Street in Airport Heights after reportedly firing on the officers first, police said.

Officers had responded to the area around 2:13 a.m. Thursday to investigate a report of a “vehicle prowler" when they located Aikey, who they believed to be the suspected prowler, police said.

Police said Aikey ignored officers’ commands to stop running and led them on a foot pursuit before opening fire on them. The officers fired back “multiple times.”

Aikey was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 2:45 a.m., police said.

He has one prior misdemeanor conviction for reckless driving and several minor offenses, but no felonies, according to court records.
