Man who died in East Anchorage shooting fatally wounded his wife and then killed himself, police say

A man found dead after an East Anchorage shooting on Sunday shot his wife before turning the gun on himself, police said in a Wednesday alert.

Police responding to a shots-fired call at a home on the 5900 block of East Sixth Avenue, off Boniface Parkway, found Danny Smalley, 61, dead in an upstairs bathroom around 2 a.m. Sunday. He had been shot in the upper body, police said.

His wife, 46-year-old Brenda Smalley, who was with her husband in the bathroom, had also been shot. She was taken to a hospital, where she died Monday from her injuries.

Investigators, who initially described the shooting as a domestic violence incident, determined that Danny Smalley shot his wife before killing himself, police said.

The couple had petitioned to dissolve their marriage less than two weeks before the shooting, according to court records.

Four adult family members were inside the home when the shooting happened, police said.
