Woman charged with DUI, manslaughter, in Sterling motorcycle collision

A 53-year-old woman has been charged with manslaughter and drunken driving after police say her pickup collided with and killed a motorcyclist Thursday in Sterling.

Troopers say Aprile Dawn Cresap was driving a Chevy pickup truck on Joyfull Circle, a dead-end residential road in Sterling, when she tried turning left onto Peacefull Lane.

Cresap saw a BMW motorcycle traveling down Peacefull Lane, troopers said. Both Cresap and the motorcyclist swerved left, and the motorcycle collided with the front passenger side of the Chevy.

The motorcyclist, identified as 60-year-old Michael Corteg, of Sterling, was thrown from the bike and landed off the road. He died at the scene. He was wearing a helmet, troopers said.

Troopers were notified of the collision at 5 p.m. Thursday. Officers contacted Cresap after the incident, said spokeswoman Megan Peters.

"Field sobriety tests were done on scene. She was arrested that evening," Peters wrote.

Cresap was in custody Monday at the Wildwood Pretrial Facility in Kenai. Cresap's court-appointed attorney did not immediately return a request for comment on Monday.
