New Year’s Day death in Big Lake was a homicide, troopers say

A 37-year-old woman was killed early on New Year's Day in what Alaska State Troopers are calling a homicide.

Wasilla resident Amy Smith died on Monday morning. Alaska State Troopers and emergency responders got a report at 4:54 a.m. that CPR was being performed on Smith.

An autopsy the next day "indicated the cause of death was homicide," troopers said. Anthony Smith of Wasilla, 38, was arrested around 4 p.m. on Tuesday. He was taken to the Mat-Su Pre-Trial facility, where he was being held without bail, according to troopers.

Online records did not show any charges filed against Smith on Tuesday. Questions to troopers regarding other details about the case were not immediately answered Tuesday evening.
