1 dead, 1 wounded in Aniak shooting spree, troopers say

An Aniak man was arrested and on Monday was in custody following the shooting death Sunday of a man and the wounding of a woman in the Western Alaska village, troopers said.

Joseph Patrick Yaska, 29, was charged with first-degree murder and attempted murder and assault, according to Alaska State Troopers.

In a statement, troopers said Yaska shot and wounded a woman as she fled a home early Sunday morning. Troopers said Yaska then shot and killed Bruce Morgan, 24, of Aniak, and continued to fire at a nearby residence, almost hitting several people.

The woman is recovering from her injuries, troopers said.

The Alaska Bureau of Investigation and Bethel Violent Offenders Unit responded to the village for the investigation. Yaska was transported to the Yukon Kuskokwim Correctional Center in Bethel, troopers said.

Note: An earlier version of this story incorrectly said that the woman was a family member of the accused man. She is not related to him.
