Man killed while trying to break into house, Anchorage police say

UPDATE Aug. 22: Anchorage police on Tuesday identified the man killed by gunfire as Terrance Williams, 25.

Police spokesman MJ Thim said investigation of the incident was continuing.

ORIGINAL STORY:

A shooting in Anchorage's Jewel Lake neighborhood Tuesday is being investigated as a "home invasion and homicide," according to the Anchorage Police Department.

The shooting, reported at 5:20 a.m., killed one of two suspects in a home invasion, said police spokesman MJ Thim.

The two men were trying to enter a home on the 3700 block of Core Court, off Jewel Lake Road, when a person living there shot one of them, Thim said.

Both men tried to run away; the injured man was found by police lying in a driveway with a gunshot wound to the chest. He died of his injuries at a local hospital, according to Thim.

"No arrests have been made and there is no suspect information to release at this time," Thim said.

Thim said earlier Tuesday that officers were questioning several people at the scene but no one had been taken into custody or charged.

The shooting is the latest in a string of violent incidents in Alaska's largest city this past week. On Monday, a man was found shot in a vehicle in East Anchorage, with life-threatening injuries. Last Wednesday, a man was stabbed to death in Midtown. Last Thursday and Friday, police were involved in two separate standoffs, one of which ended when two people in a South Anchorage home were found dead.

Police have said that all the incidents are isolated and not related.
