Pilot Station man, 23, charged with murder for shotgun slaying

A 23-year-old Pilot Station man has been charged Friday with killing another resident in a shotgun slaying after a fight at a residence, Alaska State Troopers said.

Troopers got a report about a fatal shooting in the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta village at about 12:29 a.m. Thursday, according to the dispatch.

"A Village Police Officer in the community confirmed that Dennis Alick, 27, of Pilot Station, was deceased," troopers said.

Troopers based in Bethel traveled to Pilot Station to investigate. A criminal complaint against suspect Brian Fancyboy, written by Trooper Nicholas Hayes, said Alick and friends went to a home Fancyboy was at "to take alcohol back after it had been stolen from them previously." During an ensuing brawl outside the home, Fancyboy ran inside.

"The fight concluded and people were separated, at which point Brian retrieved a 12-gauge shotgun, opened the front door and shot Dennis Alick in the face at a distance of approximately 5-10 feet, causing Dennis to die," Hayes wrote.

Hayes said Fancyboy admitted he fired toward people "to scare them away" before he fled as well, but said he hadn't meant to hit them. Troopers initially placed Fancyboy in protective custody and consulted the Bethel district attorney before Fancyboy was arrested on charges of first-degree murder and weapons misconduct.

Fancyboy was to be taken to Bethel and jailed at the Yukon Kuskokwim Correctional Center, troopers said. Alick's body was being taken to the State Medical Examiner Office for an autopsy.

Online court records do not yet list an initial hearing date for Fancyboy.
