Juneau police warn businesses to look out for fake 'Motion Picture Use Only' bills

Juneau police are asking residents to beware of fake money circulating in the Alaska's capital city following nine incidents involving $50 or $100 bills with the words "Motion Picture Use Only" printed on them.

The use and attempted use of the counterfeit bills has been reported over the past month, according to a statement from the Juneau Police Department.

"Without close inspection, the bills may appear real with the exception of the 'Motion Picture Use Only' notation," the statement says.

All of the reports came from local businesses, said police spokeswoman Erann Kalwara.

While the majority of reports involve the "Motion Picture" bills, there are other fakes. One case involved a $20 with "Chinese writing" on it, Kalwara said.

One case appears to be a "counterfeit attempt," she said. That means the person was aware the money was not genuine and used it to make a purchase or get change.

The police department encouraged businesses to alert their employees and keep watch for any of the fake bills.

Anyone who encounters the fake bills is asked to contact the police department at 907-586-0600 or submit a tip through the Juneau Crime Line website.
