Youth killed in Seward Highway accident

Seth Mandel, 11, of Anchorage died Friday night from injuries he suffered in a vehicle accident at Mile 76.6 of the Seward Highway, state troopers said.

Mandel was in a rear seat of a Subaru Legacy driven by Peter Mandel, 45, of Anchorage when a Ford van crossed the center line. Seth Mandel was pronounced dead at the scene while Peter Mandell and Molly Mandel, 7, were transported to Providence Alaska Medical Center for treatment of injuries, troopers said.

The van driver was Rick Langfitt, 51, of Kodiak. The van carried seven teenagers from a Kodiak American Legion baseball team on their way back home. All of the baseball players suffered minor injuries, and Langfitt wasn't hurt, troopers said. The highway was closed for about 4 1/2 hours.
