Goats, horses, llamas flee Sockeye Fire along with humans and sled dogs

Along with humans and sled dogs, dozens of horses, llamas, goats and other animals have been evacuated from the area affected by the Sockeye Fire as of Monday morning.

Heather Jewell, a horse trainer with the Alaska Horse Ranch/Plettner Kennels in Big Lake said her barn had taken in a few horses so far.

Mostly she'd been organizing trailers to get horses out of the evacuation area.

"Most people don't have trailers for their horses," Jewell said.

So far, she and another horse trainer had helped coordinate the transport of 42 horses out of the evacuation zone, plus "three or four dozen goats and sheep" and a "truckload of llamas."

Some people outside the evacuation zone with very old or young horses have also chosen to move them away from the smoke, Jewell said.

The animals are being housed all over the Mat-Su, Jewell said.

"I think we have it under control. All the barns are working together to get this done."

On Monday morning, a small search party was looking for two horses that had gotten loose around mile 66 of the Parks Highway.

"I'm sure we'll find them soon," she said.

People who need help evacuating their animals can call or text Jewell at 907-355-1967.
