1 dead, 2 injured in head-on collision involving semi on Seward Highway near Girdwood

A man died and two people were injured late Thursday in a head-on collision involving a semitruck on the Seward Highway near Girdwood, Anchorage police said.

The collision closed the highway through Friday morning at Mile 91, between Bird Point and Girdwood.

The semi was southbound when it collided with a northbound Kia Sorento SUV just before 8:45 p.m., police spokeswoman Amanda Brimanis said. The man driving the SUV died at the scene, and the man and woman in the semi were treated at a hospital for injuries not considered life-threatening, she said.

The highway was closed in both directions as officers investigated and was opened for alternating traffic around 1 a.m. Friday, Brimanis said. The road was fully reopened by 6 a.m., she said.

It was not immediately clear what caused the collision. Brimanis said the investigation was ongoing.

The Department of Transportation described driving conditions in the area on Friday morning as difficult. The highway was wet and icy, with black ice and snow on the road, the department said.
