Pedestrian struck by SUV in South Anchorage dies at scene, police say

Update, Nov. 14: Police have identified the person struck and killed by an SUV on Nov. 8 as 33-year-old Matthew Douglas.

A department spokeswoman said the SUV driver remained in the area and was cooperative with police. No charges have been filed.

A pedestrian was struck by an SUV and died at the scene of the collision Friday night in South Anchorage, police said.

Officers and Anchorage Fire Department medics responded around 9:35 p.m. Friday to a report of the collision near Brayton Drive and South Heather Meadows Loop, police said in an online update. The collision occurred along a part of Brayton Drive that’s parallel to the Seward Highway and south of Abbott Road.

A silver SUV was traveling northbound on Brayton Drive when it hit a pedestrian who was in the road, according to indications from a preliminary investigation, police said.

The identity of the pedestrian, who was pronounced dead at the site of the collision, will be released once next of kin have been notified, police said.

Friday’s incident marks at least the 14th pedestrian fatality in Anchorage this year.

More recently in October, a driver accused of striking and seriously injuring a downtown pedestrian with her car before driving away was charged with assault, driving under the influence and leaving the scene of an accident.
