First heavy snow of the season is possible for Anchorage starting late Monday, says weather service

The first heavy snowfall of the season for the Anchorage area is possible starting late Monday, according to the National Weather Service.

Between 6 and 12 inches of heavy snow is possible from Monday evening to Tuesday morning, the weather service said Sunday.

Light snow is expected to begin Monday morning, possibly mixing with rain by afternoon, the weather service said. By Monday evening, a band of heavy snow was expected to develop between Anchorage and the western Kenai Peninsula, the weather service said.

Heavy snow was also forecast for the western Kenai Peninsula, with between 6 and 12 inches possible. Between 4 and 8 inches inches is possible in the Matanuska Valley. A winter storm watch was in effect Sunday evening for Anchorage the western Kenai Peninsula.
