Driver dies in fiery East Anchorage collision, police say

The driver of a pickup died early Monday following a fiery collision involving an SUV in East Anchorage, police said.

The other driver was in a northbound SUV on Bragaw Street just after 6 a.m. when they entered the intersection with Seventh Avenue and collided with the westbound pickup, police said.

The truck caught fire upon impact and the driver died at the scene, according to police. The man driving the SUV was transported to a hospital with serious injuries that he is expected to survive, they said.

Bragaw was closed Monday morning in both directions between Sixth and Eighth avenues while police investigated the scene. Traffic was being diverted east at Sixth and west to Penland Parkway, police said.

A department spokeswoman said she could not immediately answer questions about the collision Monday morning because officers were “still working the scene” and confirming details.

The investigation into the collision is ongoing and police said no charges were immediately filed on Monday morning. They asked anyone with surveillance footage of the area or other information about the collision to call dispatch at 311 (option #1) or 907-786-8900 (option #0).
