SUV fatally strikes woman walking across Minnesota Drive, Anchorage police say

A woman died early Friday after she was struck by an SUV while crossing Minnesota Drive, Anchorage police said.

She is the fourth pedestrian to die within a week in the Anchorage area.

Around 3:45 a.m. Friday, a man was driving a Honda Pilot southbound on Minnesota when he struck a woman who was crossing the road on foot outside of a crosswalk near the intersection at 34th Avenue, police said. Life-saving measures were performed on the woman before she was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

The driver cooperated with officers and remained at the scene, police said. Charges were not immediately filed.

The southbound lanes of Minnesota Drive were closed from Benson Boulevard to Spenard Road for several hours Friday morning but had fully reopened by 10:15 a.m., police said in an alert.

The woman will be publicly identified after her next-of-kin has been notified of her death, according to police.

Police asked anyone with surveillance footage of the area or other information about the crash to call dispatch at 311, option 1, or 907-786-8900, option 0. Anonymous tips can be submitted online.
