1 dead, 2 injured in Seward Highway crash south of Anchorage

One person died and two people were injured in a crash on the Seward Highway south of Anchorage on Saturday.

The crash at Mile 114, south of the Potter Marsh Weigh Station, prompted officials to close the highway in both directions for several hours, snarling traffic and contributing to long delays on a busy summer weekend.

By 6:40 p.m. Saturday, the highway had reopened to traffic in both directions, the Anchorage Police Department said in an updated alert.

Police said patrol officers had responded just before noon Saturday to a report of a two-vehicle crash at Mile 114. An initial investigation indicated that a Kia heading north on the highway, toward Anchorage, crossed over the double-yellow center line and hit a Ford F-150 pickup that was traveling south, police said.

The man driving the Kia — the car’s sole occupant — was pronounced dead at the scene, according to police. The two adults in the pickup were taken to a hospital with injuries that police described as “serious but non-life-threatening.”

The cause of the crash is still under investigation, according to police. The department said that alcohol was “believed to be a factor on behalf of the Kia’s driver,” who wasn’t identified in the update.
