Man who died in South Anchorage motorcycle crash was survivor of Gulf of Alaska crab boat sinking

A man who died Sunday evening in a South Anchorage motorcycle crash was one of two survivors of a Gulf of Alaska crab boat sinking in 2019.

Anchorage police were called to the roundabout at O’Malley Road and C Street just after 7 p.m., police wrote in an online alert. Jon Lawler, 36, had been southbound on C Street when the motorcycle lost control in the roundabout, police said.

Lawler died at the scene.

Police closed down both roundabouts in the area immediately following the crash.

Lawler, an Anchorage resident, was one of two survivors of the Scandies Rose crab ship sinking on Dec. 31, 2019. Five crew members died. In an online fundraiser, Lawler’s family said the incident left him with lasting trauma.
