Early snowfall and more wintry weather on the way is prompting the city of Anchorage let residents drive with studded tires eight days early this year.
In a public notice Tuesday, the Municipality of Anchorage said studded tires will be allowed starting Sept. 23.
The announcement cited Tuesday’s weather conditions and snow in the forecast.
The National Weather Service is forecasting rain and snow in the Anchorage area from Thursday through the weekend.
The Anchorage Assembly in 2019 shortened studded tire season and prohibited their use before Oct. 1. But city code allows the municipal traffic engineer to permit studded tire use earlier in the season “in response to anticipated snow-cover conditions.”
