Update Tuesday: Police on Tuesday identified the passenger who was killed as 55-year-old Candace Hathaway. The exact cause of the crash is still being investigated, police said.
Original story:
A woman died Thursday in a crash on DeBarr Road in East Anchorage, police said.
Officers were called to the scene shortly before 3 p.m., according to an alert from the Anchorage Police Department.
A Chevy Suburban and a Ford Mustang collided at the intersection of DeBarr Road and Edward Street, near the Russian Jack Plaza strip mall, according to police.
The Mustang had been traveling eastbound on DeBarr Road while the Chevy traveled west. The two collided as the Mustang attempted to make a left turn onto Edward Street, said Steve Buchta, a collision investigator with the police department.
The female passenger in the Mustang was declared dead at the scene, police said. The woman driving the car was taken to a hospital with life-threatening injuries, and a dog inside the car was also dead.
The man driving the Suburban was not injured, police said.
Buchta said he didn’t believe anyone else was in the vehicles.
Police continued to investigate the cause of the crash Thursday, he said. The investigation will include reviewing footage from traffic cameras to determine who had the right of way.
Westbound DeBarr Road was closed as police investigated Thursday evening, but all lanes had reopened to traffic by 7 p.m.
Earlier in the evening, crews were moving the twisted, red Mustang onto a truck. The maroon-colored Suburban, its front crushed, remained at the intersection.
Police have not released the names of the people involved in the crash.
Correction: An earlier version of this story incorrectly reported, based on information from police, that a man was driving the Mustang involved in the crash.
