Woman killed in collision that closed Glenn Highway for hours

A fatal crash on the Glenn Highway at Chugiak left a woman dead and diverted traffic for several hours Tuesday evening.

Shortly after 4 p.m. Tuesday, officers responded to a report of a pedestrian hit by a car at South Birchwood, Anchorage police said in an alert. Police believe two vehicles crashed into each other, coming to a stop in the center median. As the drivers left their vehicles and approached the edge of the highway, a third driver lost control of their vehicle and hit one of the drivers from the original crash, police said.

"Multiple witnesses stopped and began performing CPR on the adult female driver," police said. "Medics declared her deceased shortly after arriving on scene."

Police did not identify the woman in the alert.

The highway was closed in both directions as investigators worked the scene, police said. By 8 p.m., police had reopened the Glenn to all traffic.
