Rockslide briefly blocks northbound Seward Highway near McHugh Creek

A rockslide triggered by rainy, windy weather briefly closed the northbound Seward Highway on Tuesday morning, authorities said.

The slide occurred at Mile 111.5, according to an Anchorage Police Department update Tuesday morning. That's just south of McHugh Creek.

Rocks on the roadway were reported to the Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities around 6:10 a.m., a spokeswoman said. Crews cleared the road and it was reopened by about 7 a.m.

Another rock fell onto the highway last night a mile away, but it was easily cleared, DOT spokeswoman Shannon McCarthy said.

A rockslide partly closed the highway in September at Mile 105, blocking the northbound lane. Police at the time warned that terrain above the slide remained unstable and might pose a risk for another landslide.
