Anchorage federal building evacuated for ‘hazardous materials response,’ official says

An Anchorage federal building was evacuated Tuesday afternoon for a "hazardous materials response," Anchorage Fire Department assistant chief Erich Scheunemann said.

The federal building at 222 W. Seventh Ave. was evacuated at 4:10 p.m. Tuesday, Scheunemann said. Six units responded. Nobody was hurt, he said.

Scheunemann said the fire department didn't yet know what the substance was. Crews were checking the building, he said.

At 5:34 p.m., fire department personnel had wrapped up and had passed the investigation along to law enforcement, Scheunemann said.

Anchorage Police Department spokesperson Renee Oistad said that officers went to the building at 4:25 p.m. “regarding a bag containing an unknown substance.” She didn’t have any more information on Tuesday evening.
