26-year-old man killed after he lost control of his car on the Seward Highway, Anchorage police say

A 26-year-old man died early Sunday after he lost control of his car on the Seward Highway near the Rabbit Creek Road exit, according to the Anchorage Police Department.

Police say Derrick Johnson, of Anchorage, was alone in a green 1995 Ford Taurus as he drove southbound on the Seward Highway. Close to the exit, his car slid sideways and then flipped. Johnson was not wearing a seatbelt and was thrown from the car, said MJ Thim, a police spokesman.

The car rolled into a ditch and landed on top of Johnson, Thim said.

Police first learned of the crash around 3:50 a.m. Sunday.

Authorities shut down the highway's southbound lanes in the area for several hours. Emergency responders declared Johnson dead at the scene.

Thim said police believe speed was a factor in the crash based on evidence at the scene including the skid marks on the highway and the damage to the car.

Police continue to investigate the crash, he said, including just how fast Johnson's car was traveling when he lost control. The speed limit in the area is 65 mph.
