The Anchorage Police Department identified the child who was struck and killed Monday.

"After speaking with our chaplains, the parents asked for our assistance with sharing family information.

"Their son's name is Carlito Allen Ramos. He was 4-years-old. He had two brothers and one sister. He was the youngest. The family is grateful for the public outpouring of support. They ask for privacy during this time," MJ Thim, police spokesman, wrote in a statement.

Original story:

A boy died Monday afternoon after he was hit by a vehicle in South Anchorage, an Anchorage Police Department official said.

The incident happened just before 3 p.m. Monday, in the 12500 block of Silver Fox Lane, according to MJ Thim, police spokesman.

"It's a very tragic situation," Thim told an Alaska Dispatch News photographer at the scene.

"What we know right now is that a neighbor got into a small SUV, backed up, struck the child, immediately got out and found the boy laying down," Thim said.

The neighbor, an adult woman, called for help and called 911. The father came out of the house, Thim said. Together they put the boy into the SUV and drove to a nearby medical facility. The child succumbed to his injuries, Thim said.

The victim's age was not immediately available.
