Assembly: Proposed Anchorage red light camera initiative to get further discussion

Anchorage Assemblyman Dick Traini said he'd like more time before asking the Assembly to take action on his proposed ballot initiative for red-light cameras.

At Tuesday's Assembly meeting, Traini requested meetings with the Assembly's rules committee next week on his proposal to ask voters to allow the use of automated tickets to cite drivers who run red lights. Under city charter, only sworn police officers can enforce traffic laws.

Traini also asked for a meeting on his proposal for a 2 percent increase in the city's bed tax, with revenue dedicated to the city police department. He's also hoping to put that initiative on the April ballot. The bed tax is the tax paid on rental rooms in hotels, motels, and bed and breakfasts.

The meeting on red light cameras has been scheduled for Jan. 20 for 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m., said city clerk Barbara Jones. She said she expected the bed tax meeting to follow immediately.

Traini said members of the public could testify at both hearings.
