Eight teenagers were injured in an explosion during a party at a Kodiak beach early Saturday, and one teen was arrested for allegedly placing a fuel drum in a fire, Alaska State Troopers said.
Between 20 and 40 teenagers were at the party at about 1:15 a.m. at White Sands Beach when one teen reportedly placed “a 55-gallon drum of fuel” in a fire, causing a large explosion, troopers said in an online report.
Eight of the teens were injured, with five transported to Anchorage area hospitals with “moderate injuries,” troopers said.
None of the injuries were considered life-threatening, troopers spokesman Austin McDaniel said Sunday.
The teen was arrested and referred to Division of Juvenile Justice custody, troopers said. Under Alaska law, juvenile charges and court proceedings are generally considered confidential.
Most of those at the party were high school-aged, McDaniel said.
Further details weren’t immediately available. McDaniel said troopers were still interviewing witnesses and investigating the incident on Sunday.
Troopers asked anyone who attended the party or has first-hand information about the incident to contact them at (907) 486-4121.
