Ninilchik woman dies in rollover on icy stretch of Sterling Highway, troopers say

A 67-year-old Ninilchik resident died Wednesday morning after she lost control of her vehicle on an icy section of the Sterling Highway, Alaska State Troopers say.

Cheryl Komakhuk was southbound in the area of Anchor Point near Mile 157 of the highway when the Jeep she was driving slid and rolled into the ditch, troopers said. Komakhuk, who was the only person in the vehicle, was pronounced dead at the scene, they said.

Her body will be sent to the State Medical Examiner Office for autopsy.

Officials warned of the potential for slick roads as cold air moves into Southcentral, with evening temperatures expected to drop into the low 20s by Friday.
