Investigation underway into Nikiski fire that killed woman

State fire marshals on Tuesday continued to investigate the cause of a fire that killed a woman in Nikiski last week, Alaska State Troopers said.

Firefighters from Nikiski were called to a motor home and travel trailer on Arctic Circle last Wednesday after a neighbor reported a fire, troopers spokesman Tim DeSpain said Tuesday. They found the woman dead inside the travel trailer, troopers said.

The woman had lived in the travel trailer and no one else was there when the fire began, DeSpain said.

The cause of the fire has not yet been determined, but it was likely accidental, DeSpain said. Investigators found multiple ignition sources, he said, and it was not clear whether there were working smoke detectors inside.

The woman’s body was sent to the State Medical Examiner Office for autopsy and positive identification, troopers said.

At least 22 people have died in fires throughout Alaska so far this year, DeSpain said.

Separately, the Anchorage Fire Department responded to two house fires in Eagle River early Monday, but no one was injured in either blaze, according to a department statement.

Fire investigators were looking into what caused the fires and were working with detectives from the Anchorage Police Department to determine if they were related, the statement said.
