Man found dead on island shore near Kodiak with kayak nearby

A Kodiak man was found dead on a nearby island shore Monday as a partially submerged kayak was also reported to authorities, Alaska State Troopers said,

Troopers said in an online report that they responded to the area after receiving a report around 10:30 a.m. Monday about the kayak and the body found on Woody Island, near the City of Kodiak.

The Kodiak Daily Mirror reported that a U.S. Coast Guard helicopter crew had located the body washed up on the island Monday morning after the kayak was spotted drifting offshore by about 100 yards.

Troopers identified the deceased as Michael Thomas Motes, 37. His next of kin has been notified, and his body is being transported to the State Medical Examiner Office in Anchorage for an autopsy, troopers said.

Their investigation into the man’s death is ongoing, troopers said.
