Pennsylvania woman dies on guided raft trip near Copper Center

A Pennsylvania woman died and two others were seriously injured Sunday night when the guided raft she was on rolled in the Klutina River near Copper Center, Alaska State Troopers said.

The raft had four people onboard when it was pinned by the river current against landslide debris and rolled around 6:30 p.m., troopers said. There were two other guided rafts with it when it flipped, troopers said.

The guide and two of the passengers were rescued by one of the other rafts, but the remaining passenger was not immediately located, troopers said. Good Samaritans saw and rescued the fourth person downriver at the Richardson Highway Bridge, troopers said.

Deborah Burke, 65, had been brought onto the other raft, but died from her injuries, troopers said. Her next-of-kin were on scene, according to troopers.

The rafting guide and one of the other passengers were treated on scene before being medevaced to Anchorage for serious injuries, troopers said.
