Man riding dirt bike killed in collision on Kodiak Island, troopers say

A 33-year-old Kodiak man died Friday night when he was struck by a vehicle while riding a dirt bike in the community of Chiniak, Alaska State Troopers said.

Culen Griffin was struck by a vehicle on the Chiniak Highway around 10:40 p.m. Friday, troopers said. Griffin was wearing a helmet, troopers spokesman John Dougherty said Monday. It’s legal to ride a dirt bike on a roadway if it is registered, Dougherty said.

Griffin was unresponsive when first responders arrived and he died at the scene, troopers said. No additional information about the incident was immediately available.

The investigation into the cause of the collision was ongoing and no charges had been filed as of Monday afternoon, Dougherty said. The state Medical Examiner’s Office is conducting an autopsy.

The 42-mile Chiniak Highway connects the community of Chiniak on Kodiak Island to the city of Kodiak.
